Africa dealer verification
How African buyers can verify a Chinese vehicle dealer before paying
A credible dealer check connects the Chinese contracting party to identifiable vehicles, destination-country eligibility, measurable support and controlled payment milestones. A licence image or showroom video proves very little on its own.

Name the country, port and registration market first
Africa is not a single customs or vehicle-approval territory. Requirements for new and used vehicles, age, emissions, left- or right-hand drive, pre-shipment inspection, importer status and registration documents vary by country. Start the enquiry with the destination country, entry port, final registration location, intended use, importer of record and expected arrival date. A responsible local authority or qualified clearance specialist should confirm the current path before the buyer commits money.
Kenya's import-inspection system and South Africa's Letter of Authority process illustrate different national controls; neither is a template for the whole continent. A seller's claim that it has completed African orders is therefore weak evidence. Ask it to identify the destination rule, required certificate, inspection location and responsible party. Have destination-side specialists test that document plan before any non-refundable inspection, modification or shipping charge is incurred.
Verify the seller and its real export role
A business licence shows that a company is registered; it does not establish brand authority, ownership of displayed stock or the ability to export it. Obtain the registered Chinese name, unified social credit code, address, legal representative, bank beneficiary and authority of the contract signatory. Check official corporate records and independently contact another party in the claimed authorization chain. Manufacturer or distributor authorization should identify scope, territory and validity rather than appear as an undated logo page.
For used vehicles, China's official process covers approved exporting enterprises, export licences, vehicle registration, inspection reports and aftersales content in the export contract. Establish who owns each vehicle, who will apply for the licence, and whose name will appear as exporter on the customs declaration. Those roles should align with the contract and payment route. If an undisclosed intermediary is required, stop until its identity, authority, fees and liability are documented.
Make the quotation point to identifiable vehicles
Replace an assertion of ready stock with a vehicle-level schedule. It should show full VIN, build date, model and configuration code, colour, mileage status, key count and storage location. Request a continuous live video using a same-day instruction: begin with the site identity, walk around the vehicle, and show the VIN plates, instrument display, engine bay or charging inlet. Reusable catalogue photographs and a video of unrelated cars are not stock evidence.
For new supply, distinguish an unregistered export vehicle from a China-registered or nearly new unit moving through the used-vehicle process. For used supply, obtain registration and ownership records, maintenance and damage information, lien or seizure status, and the required third-party inspection. VINs must remain identical across contract, invoice, packing list, export licence and bill of lading. A mismatch is a stop condition, not an administrative detail to be corrected after arrival.
Tie approval and safety evidence to the exact variant
One model name may cover different lamps, emissions calibration, airbag counts, stability control, infotainment language, charging inlet and part numbers. Ask for certificate numbers, type and variant identifiers, test reports and a specification sheet connected to the quoted VINs. The destination's recognized body must decide whether those documents support import and registration. A certificate accepted in another market or attached to a similar model is not proof for this consignment.
Global NCAP's Africa results identify the tested model, publication year and equipment, and may specify a relevant VIN range. Treat the rating as variant-specific rather than a promise made by the badge. Confirm airbags, electronic stability control, child-restraint anchors and driver-assistance hardware on the actual order. If a safety feature is optional, place it in the signed specification, VIN build record and inspection checklist instead of relying on a sales message.
Test dealer capability against roads and repair reality
Heat, dust, heavy rain, long distances and damaged roads create very different downtime risks across African routes. Require the seller to explain tyre availability, spare-wheel provision, filtration, cooling, underbody protection and severe-duty service intervals. A pilot should reproduce payload, gradients, corrugations, hot idling and the actual fuel or charging environment. A short urban demonstration mainly confirms that the vehicle moves; it does not validate a fleet duty cycle.
Aftersales promises become useful only when tied to named people, parts and labour. Ask the destination workshop to confirm diagnostic hardware, software accounts, trained technicians, warranty authority and stock for service, collision and suspension items. Price sample repairs such as a windscreen, damper, control module or high-voltage component, including replenishment origin and lead time. This exposes the difference between a displayed dealer pin and a service operation that can reduce downtime.
Use the contract to control payment and shipment
The pro forma invoice and contract should state both legal parties, every VIN, configuration, quantity, currency, chosen Incoterms rule and named place, delivery window, documents, inspection rights, warranty counterparty and remedies. Link payments to observable outputs such as an accepted vehicle schedule, a passed independent inspection and an approved bill-of-lading draft. Never redirect a substantial balance to a personal or newly substituted account because someone produced photographs from a port.
Before loading, an independent inspector should record exterior condition, mileage, VIN, keys, tools and functional checks against the contract, preserving dated evidence. Insurance must match the agreed transport leg and the carrier must accept the powertrain, including any battery conditions. Repeat the same inspection at destination and follow contractual notice periods for loss, damage or specification mismatch. Without that continuity, even a genuine seller can leave the buyer carrying an unprovable claim.
Let a controlled pilot earn a larger order
A first transaction should measure both supplier performance and vehicle suitability. Use a limited pilot to exercise real export documentation, customs clearance, inland delivery, handover, service and replenishment. Record document errors, transit time, damage, faults, energy use, repair waits and customer feedback. The batch should be large enough to reveal process weaknesses but small enough that one approval or support failure does not become a damaging inventory position.
Score the supplier on identity and payment alignment, vehicle reality, destination eligibility, safety specification, contract control, logistics evidence and aftersales capability. Unclear export roles, unverifiable VINs, unconfirmed admission documents, no critical-parts plan or unexplained beneficiary changes should halt the deal. Only evidence continuity and a pilot that meets pre-agreed customs, delivery, reliability and support thresholds justify preferred-supplier status or greater volume.
Frequently asked questions
Is a Chinese dealer's business licence enough verification?
No. Verify signing and payment authority, vehicle source, exact stock and export role, then cross-check material claims with official records or independent counterparties.
How can a remote buyer prove the cars are really in stock?
Obtain a VIN schedule, require a continuous live video with a same-day instruction, and commission an independent physical inspection before a major payment.
Can approval documents used in one African country work in another?
Do not assume so. The documents must match the exact variant and VIN scope, and the destination authority must confirm acceptance under current national rules.
What is a sensible way to manage a first order?
Use a limited pilot, staged payments, independent pre-shipment inspection and written remedies, with expansion tied to customs, delivery, fault and parts metrics.
How should an importer verify a claimed service network?
Contact the named destination workshops directly and document their diagnostic access, technicians, warranty authority, parts stock and lead times for sample repairs.
